German industrial metallers RAMMSTEIN have released an epic nine-minute Specter Berlin-directed video for “Deutschland”, the first single from their long-awaited seventh studio album, simply titled “Rammstein”. The LP comes out May 17 via UME/Spinefarm in Europe and Caroline Records in the U.S.
Earlier this week, RAMMSTEIN was criticized by some Jewish leaders in Germany who believed early teasers for “Deutschland” trivialized The Holocaust.
Speaking to German newspaper Bild, Charlotte Knobloch, former president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany and Holocaust survivor, said: With this video, the band has crossed a line. The instrumentalization and trivialization of the Holocaust, as shown in the images, is irresponsible.”
“I consider this a tasteless exploitation of artistic freedom,” added Felix Klein, commissioner of anti-semitism in Germany.
RAMMSTEIN’s first studio album since 2009’s “Liebe Ist Für Alle Da” was produced by Olsen Involtini with RAMMSTEIN and was mixed at a Santa Monica, California studio with Rich Costey, an American producer who has previously worked with MUSE, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and FRANZ FERDINAND, among others.
As for the disc’s musical direction and how it compares to the band’s previous efforts, Kruspe said: “It’s so hard to say it, because I’m working four years on the record, I’m so close. I think when I listen to the record — we’re still in the process, but it’s almost ‘RAMMSTEIN 3D’ is how I describe it. We have written a lot of stuff, but we recorded, I think, 16 songs right now. We’re probably going to mix 11 songs because we’re running out of time right now. I think it’s going to be out in April, which will be the release date. Then, we’ll be on our first stadium tour, which is very exciting.”
Rammstein (German pronunciation: [ˈʁamʃtaɪn]) is a German Neue Deutsche Härte band from Berlin, formed in 1994. Throughout their existence, their six-man lineup has remained unchanged — lead vocalist Till Lindemann, lead guitarist Richard Z. Kruspe, rhythm guitarist Paul Landers, bassist Oliver Riedel, keyboardist Christian “Flake” Lorenz, and drummer Christoph “Doom” Schneider. Prior to their formation, various members were associated with acts such as Feeling B, First Arsch and Die Firma.
After winning a contest for amateur bands, Rammstein were able to record demo tapes and send them to different record labels; they were eventually signed by Motor Music. Working with producer Jacob Hellner, they released Herzeleid, their debut album, in 1995. Though it initially didn’t sell well, they gained popularity through their live performances. Their rise led to the release of their second album, Sehnsucht, two years later. It debuted at number one in Germany and resulted in a worldwide tour that lasted nearly four years. The album also spawned the successful singles “Engel” and “Du hast” and live album Live aus Berlin.
Following the expansive tour, Rammstein recorded and released Mutter in 2001. Six singles were released from the album, all charting in multiple countries throughout Europe. The lead single, “Sonne”, reached number two in Germany. After signing with major label Universal Music, they released Reise, Reise in 2004 and had two more singles reach number two in Germany; “Mein Teil” and “Amerika”. The following year saw the release of their fifth album, Rosenrot, and a live release, Völkerball, one year after.
Rammstein is a German metal band which was formed in 1994, in Berlin, and consists of Till Lindemann (lead vocals), Richard Kruspe (lead guitar and backing vocals), Paul Landers (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Oliver Riedel (bass guitar, “Ollie”), Christoph Schneider (drums and Electronic percussion, “Doom”) and Christian Lorenz (keyboards, “Flake”). The band is widely accepted as part of the Neue Deutsche Härte scene, alongside bands such as Oomph!, Laibach, and Die Krupps. Their songs are performed almost exclusively in German. They have sold over 22 million records worldwide. Rammstein’s entire catalogue is published by Universal Music Group. Since its formation, Rammstein has had no changes in lineup. Although the majority of their songs are written in German, Rammstein has had success across the world. Name Rammstein takes its name indirectly from the West German town of Ramstein-Miesenbach, the site of the flight show disaster on August 28, 1988. The band’s signature song, the eponymous Rammstein, is a commemoration of the tragedy that took place at the Ramstein Air Base. The extra “m” in the band’s name makes it translate literally as “ramming stone” to convey the Teutonic sound of their music. In a short period before the band became well known, they performed using the name “Rammstein”
